Typology (Greek: τύπος, "pattern" or "imprint") is the native hermeneutic of the New Testament authors themselves. Paul explicitly calls Adam a τύπος of Christ (Rom 5:14). The Letter to the Hebrews is built entirely on typological argument. This is not eisegesis imposed on the text — it is the interpretive method that Jesus Himself uses on the road to Emmaus when He opens "all the Scriptures" concerning Himself (Lk 24:27).

Catholic theology teaches that typology operates on four senses of Scripture: the literal, the allegorical (typological), the moral (tropological), and the anagogical — a framework articulated by St. John Cassian (c. 360–435) and affirmed by the Catechism of the Catholic Church §115–119.
